Quick Start Guide

Difficulty: Novice

1. Introduction

What is a VPN and why I need it?

A VPN Virtual Private Network is a type of server that provide a remote connection to a local network in a secure way. Theses servers are often used to access resources as if you were on-site or also for appearing to connection from another location that your ISP Internet Service Provider shows.

The main reason why a standard customer must use a VPN is because of the security and the encryption that it provides and also by using it as a proxy. Moreover, the Unikorn VPN servers permit you to browse the web safely and privately by hiding to your ISP what information your are looking for and also hiding your personal IP Internet Protocol address to the websites you reach.

As a service provider, we think that more and more the privacy concerns rise over the public, and more largely the Internet users will be educated to the necessity of using such network services alongside their usual ISP features.

Note: Keep your Token in a safe place, you will need it to manage your account on our website and to connect to the VPN servers. Tip: You can use the QR code feature to easily copy it on your mobile device.

You can add more time by clicking the button 'Add' in your account panel:

And select a plan: We highly recommend the 2 years option because it's the cheapest by month.

Then follow the instructions relative to your preferred payment method.

Note: Currently, there is no free trial time given at the account creation.

3. Download & Install OpenVPN

To use our services, you will need a VPN client software. We recommend the use of OpenVPN however you can use any client that is compatible with the configuration files we provide.

Installing instructions for OpenVPN differs depending of the platform or operating system your currently use; Please refer to the links below:

4. Generate the configuration file

Now you need to return to your Unikorn's account and generate a configuration file:

Go to the Login page:
You will need to enter your Token and a CAPTCHA.

On your manage panel, you can see on the right side the configuration toolbox. Select the parameters you need (Location, Platform, Port) then click 'Download':

Save the generated file somewhere on your disk. (Example: germanywindowsudp1194.ovpn)

That's all!

Note: If you don't know what Port Number to choose, don't worry let the default values. In general cases there are no needs for changing it unless you want to connect from an external WiFi network that filtrates its connections behind a firewall. In such cases, try to switch to the ports 443, 80 or 53 if you cannot reach our servers by default ports.

5. Connect using your account's VPN password.

Now you just need to start OpenVPN, select your previous configuration file and enter your credentials:

  • Username = Your Token.
  • Password = The VPN Password provided on your manage panel.
Note: On Windows, OpenVPN can have by default a maximum of 50 configuration files at the same time.

On Linux

After successful OpenVPN installation, open a Terminal ( CTRL + ALT + T on Ubuntu), then enter the following command:

sudo openvpn germany_windows_udp1194.ovpn

6. Conclusion
